FLY
Kaikoura has an airport. It is a small sealed airstrip and a log cabin terminal – very charming. The airport is mainly used for whale spotting tourist flights by Wings over Whales, but also serves small private and charter flights. Twice a day, Sounds Air offers return flights to and from Wellington.

Train
The Tranz Coastal is one of New Zealand’s most beautiful train journeys. It takes you from Christchurch to Picton, stopping in Kaikoura. The tracks hug the rugged coastline and the rear open car allows passengers to feel the salt spray. The Kaikoura train station, also serving as the Whale Watch terminal, coincidentally called the “Whale Way Station,” is located in the center of town. Hapuku locals have been known to ask the train engineer to slow down the train near the small Hapuku station (a little tin building with faded lettering) and jump off. This places you just down the country lane from the Lodge.

If arriving by train, plane or bus, we will pick you up from town on arrival and drop you back into town on departure for no fee. Should you need to go into town during your stay, we can transport you for a shuttle fee or you can request a ride from one of the two taxi companies servicing Kaikoura.
