    VISIT Kaikōura

Whale-watching, Dark Sky Sanctuary and one of New Zealand’s wildest coastlines

Where Nature Comes to You

Kaikōura is a place where mountains rise from the sea, whales breach just offshore, and nature is always just a breath away.

Kaikōura’s nutrient-rich waters are a magnet for marine life, making it a global hotspot for wildlife encounters. Sperm whales live here year-round, while dusky dolphins, fur seals, orca and humpback whales pass through the area in-season. Swim with dolphins, kayak alongside seals, or spot whales from boat or air. There are few places on Earth where these experiences are so accessible.

Rich in Culture and Community

Kaikōura’s story is one of deep connection to land and sea. Both Māori and European cultures have shaped the town, which today thrives on sustainability, local hospitality, and a strong sense of place. Its small population of artists, farmers, fishermen and storytellers gives Kaikōura a character all its own.

Scenery That Stays With You

From its craggy coastline and towering mountains to its beaches and native bush, Kaikōura’s landscapes shift with every step and season. It’s a photographer’s dream and a nature-lover’s paradise.

Dark Sky Sanctuary

At night, the stars take centre stage. Kaikōura is officially a Dark Sky Sanctuary, meaning minimal light pollution and maximum stargazing. From your Tree House or Lodge suite, the southern skies stretch wide and clear above you.

Township Life

In town, you’ll find boutique shops and art galleries, and cafes and restaurants serving up fresh Kaikōura crayfish, locally brewed beer, and garden-to-plate dining. It’s the perfect place to pick up something handcrafted or savour the flavours of the coast.

Whales

Kaikōura is one of the only places in the world where you can see sperm whales so close to shore. Seasonal visits from humpbacks, orca and pilot whales make every trip out to sea a potential surprise.

Dolphins

Dusky dolphins are a constant presence off Kaikōura, sometimes forming pods in the hundreds. You can see them by boat and kayak, or even while flying above on a scenic tour.

Seals

New Zealand fur seals haul out along Kaikōura’s rocky coast. Watch them play at the famous Seal Colony near town, or just minutes from Hapuku at Mangamaunu surf beach and Ohau Point Lookout.

Seabirds

Known as the seabird capital of the world, Kaikōura is home to rare and remarkable species, including the endangered Hutton’s shearwater, red-billed gull, little blue penguin and the mighty albatross.

  • Celebrated our anniversary with lunch here. The service, food and wine were really so wonderful. Started with an aromatic, delightful soup, followed with fish of the day in a red curry sauce, then to finish, affogato. Just the best. Fantastic way to celebrate.”

    No Name Dining

  • Everyone was so kind and went above and beyond to ensure we had a perfect stay. And the restaurant. There aren’t enough words to properly describe how good the food was here. Eat everything.”

    Colleen

  • The weather was cool during our stay, but not too cool to experience the mineral swimming pool for the first time – the hype is real! We warmed up in the spa followed by a sauna.”

    Michelle
